Key Financial and Estate Planning Issues Facing Same Sex Couples to be Addressed by Seminar at The American College
BRYN MAWR, PA April 14, 2004 -– Ground breaking event to discuss issues and concerns vital to the financial welfare of gay and lesbian families. The American College, in a ground breaking educational event, will sponsor Same Sex Couples: Key Financial and Estate Planning Issues, an in depth one-day seminar that addresses the unique planning challenges confronting today's gay and lesbian life partners. The event will be held at the Gregg Conference Center on the College's campus in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania on Monday, May 10.
"Increasingly, financial advisors are being asked to advise same sex couples on financial planning, estate planning, health care and asset distribution should one partner pass away or the relationship dissolve," said Larry Barton, PhD., President and Chief Executive Officer of The American College. "Financial professionals attending this seminar will hear about the important tools and techniques available to protect the financial interests of this increasingly affluent population segment."
Gay and lesbian life partners are not afforded the same protections married heterosexual couples and their children receive under state intestacy law. This presents problems for same sex couples in long-term committed relationships interested in protecting their financial assets, persons and property.
Professional financial advisors attending this event will:
·Learn about a variety of legal models and financial agreements that can protect the interests of high net worth same sex couples.
·Gain valuable insight into case law affecting banking and real estate assets.
·Improve their understanding of the complexities affecting employee benefits, estate planning and separation challenges faced by same sex couples.
Some of the nations leading experts in financial planning for same sex couples will share their knowledge and experience with event attendees.
" Same sex partners are looking for financial advisors who can help them negotiate the legal hurdles," continued Barton. "They want to receive the same protections enjoyed by heterosexual couples. The mission of our institution is to enhance the financial security of individuals. Same sex couples need financial security too."
The event is part of the Special Market Series. This series of monthly financial educational events focuses on meeting the financial needs of America's growing niche markets.
This one-day seminar begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. The $225 fee for the seminar includes program materials, lunch and breaks. The College's recently redecorated residency wing at the Gregg Conference Center is available for those who require overnight accommodations at an additional cost. Attendees requiring overnight accommodations are encouraged to register early, as the number of rooms is limited.
The next event in the Special Market Series focuses on providing financial advice to an increasingly affluent and growing Asian-American marketplace.
